There's something other than surfers and swimmers lurking in the ocean. Jellyfish and Man O' War can also be found floating in the surf.
Dr. Heidar Heshmati, Director of Brevard County Health Department, said you should avoid touching them, but if you do come in contact with either of these sea pests you want to get out of the water immediately.
Treatment varies depending on whether you were stung by a jellyfish or Man O' War.
A Man O' War has long tentacles, sometimes 10 to 30 feet long, and are often found in the waters off Melbourne.
"Portugese Man O' War is a toxin. It goes to your system,” Heshmati said. “It goes to your nervous system. It goes to your brain."
Jellyfish, on the other hand, have small tentacles with toxic cells.
Heshmati said vinegar can be used to remove the toxins of a jellyfish, but if it's a Man O' War sting, you want to avoid vinegar.
“We can wash with warm water to reduce the stings and then put on ice,” he said.
It doesn't matter if the jellyfish or Man O' War has been out of the water for days or even weeks; they still carry toxins and have the potential to cause a reaction.
Heshmati said, contrary to popular belief, you do not want to urinate on the sting or use fresh water or alcohol because these things stimulate the cells to release more toxins into your system.
Hesmati says there is no particular season for jellyfish to be in the water. Jellyfish bloom depends on the ecosystem.
