Expedition Day 9: the team splits.

On day nine the hikers and kayakers begin separate journeys – the hikers head down the Florida trail and the kayakers to enjoy the abundant wildlife in the restored river.

“You kind of alternate – you get close to the shore and watch these beautiful little stilts playing with each other and then all of a sudden, an alligator, so you get toward the middle,” said Doug Alderson of the Florida Office of Greenways and Trails.

The next stop for the kayakers is a meeting with teachers who are studying the restored waters. Teachers have been coming to this outreach workshop for almost 10 years, tracking the increase in the oxygen levels and the wildlife on these oxbows.

“Seeing the practices in place, getting to see the restoration when they’ve read about it, but to actually see it and do some experiments to bring back to the classrooms is extremely valuable to the teachers,” said Louisa Kerwin, director of Riverwoods Field Lab.

“I know more, I’m more knowledgeable and I bring that back to my kids,” said Sebring High School teacher Jill Scott. “They ask me more questions. I can give them more feedback.  It’s just a win-win.”

Day nine ended at Riverwoods Field Lab.  Day ten the team will hike to the Yate’s Marsh Trailhead.
