Expedition Day Five
Wednesday, March 28, 2007 8:33:04 AM
Day five started out at Camp Mack where the group split into paddlers and hikers.
The first ground stop, Lake Kissimmee State Park. Hikers walked through a proscribed burn area. The burn was done two months ago to keep the scrub jays habitat under eight feet so they could flourish.
“It’s one of the best resource management tools that we have in our research management toolbox,” said park manager Andy Nolan. “It’s what helps keep Florida natural, is these proscribed fire intervals."
Once on Lake Kissimmee, hikers followed the water line.
“Actually right now we’re going right next to a line of old oaks with the moss hanging down off all the branches,” said Beth Kelso of the Florida Trail Association. “It just kind of reminds you of old Florida. This area, between Orlando and Lake Okeechobee, is one of the few places left in Florida that you can go on a three or four day excursion and stay way out in the wilderness and enjoy it.”
On day six, the team will meet a cattle rancher on Brama Island to find out their part in Florida history.
