A team of hikers and a documentary crew are gearing up for a journey that covers 12 days and more than 100 miles.

It is called Expedition Headwaters, and its purpose is to check out an area of Florida that is undergoing a major restorations process.

News 13's Paul Milliken talked to the man who is giving his money to the project, but says he is getting something much more valuable in return.

It is not likely the golfers know the significance of where they stand but just beyond the trees flows the backbone of Florida's ecology.

"This is such a precious part of our ecosystem and without this creek, this tiny little creek, there would be no Everglades," said Harris Rosen.

Harris Rosen built his Shingle Creek Resort at the mouth of the Kissimmee River.

The Kissimmee River Restoration Project is the largest river-restoration project in the country. Now, Central Florida and the world are about to see how the project is turning out.

"This might really never have been done before, where people have hiked and kayaked and canoed all the way from here to Okeechobee," Rosen said.

Rosen is funding Expedition Headwaters. Four hikers and a camera crew will rough it out for 12 days, following the River 140 miles from Shingle Creek to Lake Okeechobee.

"We'll be monitoring and taking a look at that project, how it effects folks from Orlando all the way down," said Bob Mindick from Osceola County Parks.

Rosen said that when he built the massive hotel at Shingle Creek, he did not even know what Shingle Creek was. Now, he saidhe wants to make sure everybody, both locals and the people who will sit poolside, know what a precious resource lies just beyond the golf course."

That camera crew will produce a documentary after the expedition. For viewers, it will be a rare glimpse into an area that remains a little-known piece of the Sunshine State.

"I've done a lot in my life, and I've done a lot of really incredibly exciting things, this is one of the most exciting things," Rosen said.

Among the sponsors and coordinators of the trip are the Florida department of environmental protection, and hotel owner Harris Rosen.
