Tiffany Greene, Your Kids
Every month News 13 brings you a member of the month from one of the local Boys and Girls Clubs. This month, News 13's Tiffany Greene introduces us to one young lady who takes pride in being a mentor.
"Her feet move to the beat. Her hands sway with the music. Her smile is uptempo," Greene said about Jasmine Chatman.
"She is the epitome of what a teenager/member should be. She's what we try to produce when the kids come in from age 6, on up," said Jeronda January, the teen coordinator for the club.
Jasmine has many titles that go after her name. She's the Youth of the Year for the Pine Hills Boys and Girls Club, a junior staff member and a friend to many. But what she's most proud of is being a mentor.
"I don't have a little sister, so it feels great to have a little girl come up to me and call me her sister," Jasmine told Greene.
The funny thing is, the big sister finds herself grooming the young girls.
"Constantly, everybody kept coming to me, like, Jasmine, will you do my hair," Jasmine said.
It's a role the 16-year-old happily accepts. Every day she takes time to review homework or just read to kids. In between, she takes time to study, and somewhere she finds time to be president of the Keystone Club and teach dance.
"It's like a couple of young girls and we get together every Tuesday and Thursday in the multi-purpose room and we teach them dance to the African songs, hip-hop, jazz or whatever," Jasmine explained.
Jasmine said her eight years as a Boys and Girls Club member is teaching her to stay determined, in hopes of one day going to college, and developing a leader for the next generation.
