The Sweetwater Elementary School cafeteria looks like a normal lunchroom setting -- students enjoying their meals and having good conversation -- but soon, their pleasant dining would be interrupted by a big surprise.
Port Orange firefighters created a bonfire like atmosphere at Sweetwater Elementary. Kids got close to the guys in blue while they shared stories of fire safety.
"You need to have a plan with your mom and dad," firefighter Garfield Wilson tells the kids.
"We want to let these kids know why fires start, how they can prevent them," Wilson said.
The firefighters visit all six elementary schools in Port Orange two to three times a month. It was the highlight of third-grader Nathan Lilavois' day.
"It's pretty cool to actually meet a real hero who's actually saved people," Nathan said.
The lunchroom started to heat up as the conversations got hot and heavy.
"Feel the door to see if it's hot," Wilson told the kids. "You don't want to be jumping out of window unless the fire's right there."
"They told us not to leave anything on the stove, or don't leave things plugged into the wall when you're gone," said third-grader Ansley Hitson.
It was hard to tell who enjoys it more -- the firefighters or the kids -- but one thing was for certain: The initial sparks keep these students thirsty to learn about fire safety.
