Tennis Court Conversion

While it may be trendy to have a tennis court in your back garden, one local family created a trend of their own by taking the hard court out of the garden and turning it into something new. News 13 reporter Scott Fais tells us how they did it, in today's Your Home story.

Away from the high pressure world of professional tennis, this backyard tennis court in Longwood appears fine. Yet, underneath, it needs some care.  Remove the playing surface and you’ll find cracked pavement and sinking cement.

Instead of moaning about the problem, the homeowner looked at her options.

"She could remove the concrete and put grass in and spend X amount of dollars or spend a little bit more, and have something she could use,” said landscape designer Adam Blubaugh.

Blubaugh, with Creations Custom Landscape, admits the transformation was tough.

"Never ever done anything like this,” he said. “There is no book to read."

Like many outlying areas in Central Florida, the land the tennis court is on use to be an orange grove.  And after that, it was a golf course.  Today, the only sand-trap you'll find is this one.  The homeowner believes the roots from decaying orange trees are what caused her tennis court to collapse."

The family opted to get creative and keep the cracked foundation to build upon.

"Going about it was pretty difficult,” Blubaugh said.

The vision was grand. Working clockwise, the back right corner will feature a swing and Adirondack chairs. The front right corner will become a vegetable garden where the homeowner can grow veggies like she did in her native Pennsylvania. In the bottom left, a fire pit will provide a place for warm conversation on cool nights. The top left will sport a pergola to provide shade and a table on which to dine on. And in the very center, a fountain to tie the whole court together.

On Wednesday, we'll have a look at how this project turned out.
