ORLANDO -- “Fiddler on the Roof” opened Tuesday night at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Center, but it was the Golden Globe winner playing a milkman who caused all the chatter.
This is Chaim Topol’s farewell tour, so this week could be your last chance ever to see the 74-year-old on stage in “Fiddler on the Roof.”
It was hard for many to believe Topol played the same role as Tevye -- a character much older than he was when he started -- since he was only in his mid-30s, first on stage in London, then in the 1971 movie.
Central Florida On Demand spoke with Erik Liberman, who plays Motel the Tailor, just hours before opening night Tuesday. He described what it was like when Topol takes the stage.
“Well, it’s like, first of all, being with Mick Jagger, because when he comes out, the audience goes absolutely crazy,” Liberman said. “To be 74 years old and so connective with an audience is inspiring!”
Something Liberman said you will learn from the play is how to embrace changes in tradition, and that love comes first.
Seeing the play from the red velvet seats inside the Bob Carr Center is, of course, very different from watching the movie, but in a way you might not have thought.
Did you know a woman’s stocking was put over the camera lens during the entire filming of the movie? Director Norman Jewison felt it created a unique effect.
“Fiddler on the Roof” runs until Sunday, Oct. 4, in Orlando.
Tickets start at $38. Call (800) 982-2787, or buy tickets online at OrlandoBroadway.com.
