DELAND -- The process of creating a zoning map for a new high school in Volusia County has just wrapped up, but it is just beginning for a new elementary school.
For the new high school in Orange City, school administrators had to deal with drawing kids from number of neighboring cities -- but that’s not an issue for a new elementary school in DeLand.
School officials, however, said anytime you redraw school zoning lines, it’s a difficult process.
The new school, code-named “Elementary School Z” for now, should be ready for the next school year.
A series of four “listening sessions” are planned next week so parents and residents can express their opinions on who should attend the new school.
Monday, 6 p.m.
George Marks Elementary School
1000 N. Garfield Ave., DeLand
Tuesday, 6 p.m.
Starke Elementary School
730 S. Parsons Ave., DeLand
Wednesday, 6 p.m.
Woodward Avenue Elementary School
1201 S. Woodward Ave., DeLand
Thursday, 6:30 p.m.
Freedom Elementary School
1395 S. Blue Lake Ave., DeLand
Once the information is gathered from these listening sessions, staff may alter attendance zones, which will be presented at community meetings getting under way this January.
