The Eccleston Crippled Children's Home and Hospital was dedicated in Washington Park.
The home was the first of its kind in the country established for handicapped African-American children.
It serviced children from 11 Central Florida counties.
April 21, 1994
Osceola County cuts back on police in the classroom.
Florida schools were pouring millions of dollars into the program, where in-school deputies taught anti-drug classes and helped with campus security.
Many parents thought the program would be beneficial since the police could serve as mentors.
But at the time, Osceola County leaders said they just didn't have the money.
April 22, 1987
The National Basketball Association announced the creation of the Orlando Magic.
The idea for the team actually came four years earlier when developer Jim Hewitt got the idea for a franchise in the City Beautiful.
The Magic began playing in November of 1989 before a sellout crowd at the Orlando Arena.
Best of all, the fans kept coming. Their first 33 home games were all sold out.
April 23, 1986
Osceola County schools reported their smoking ban wasn't working.
The schools had banned smoking the year before, but leaders said the students were just taking their habit across the street.
Administrators were frustrated by the crowds of students hanging out, but admitted there wasn't much they could do.
The school continued their crackdown on smoking on campus, suspending students for violating the rules.
April 24, 1965
Orlando celebrated John Young Day.
The first John Young Award was presented to the astronaut himself.
Young made history as Orlando's first citizen in space.
Many gathered for the parade and ceremony held downtown.
There was also a special fly-by with jets from the Sanford Naval Station.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey took part in all the festivities.
April 25, 1998
The Orange and Osceola County Victim Coalition Services wrapped up its Victims’ Rights Week.
The coalitions held blood drives, a sing out, a breakfast and a candlelight vigil to remember and honor crime victims.
As a special gesture for victims, the vigil was held in broad daylight so they wouldn't have fears attending.
The coalitions also worked throughout the week to educate the public on trauma crime victims and their families' experiences.
April 26, 1988
Osceola County passes tougher laws when it comes to drinking in the car.
It ensured that anybody caught with an open container of alcohol in their vehicle would be fined $500.
County leaders thought the new ordinance would be effective.
Previously people caught with an open container were only fined $50.
