The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of new moms, requiring some employers to grant unpaid leaves of absences after having a baby.
January 14, 1939
Students at Cherokee Junior High School raised money to commemorate the roots of Orlando.
They put up a historical marker in honor of Orlando J. Reeves, a man many believe the city was named for.
The stone was placed at the southeast corner of Lake Eola where Reeves' body is supposedly buried.
Story has it, he was killed by Native Americans.
January 15, 1986
Epcot at Walt Disney World got all wet. The theme parked opened its Living Seas Pavilion.
Several aquariums allow guests to scuba dive with more than 4,000 sea creatures, while others can view sharks and dolphins through floor to ceiling windows.
In 2006, Nemo and his friends arrived as the pavilion got a makeover based on the hit movie, with a new ride and show.
January 16, 1955
Ribbon cutting ceremonies took place for the new Winter Park Memorial Hospital.
An open house followed, with tours of the 50-bed facility.
Winter Park Memorial welcomed the first patient three weeks later.
January 17, 1920
Central Florida dried up. Prohibition went into effect nationwide.
The 13-year ban restricted the making, sale and transportation of alcohol within the United States.
Florida was one of the 48 states in the Union at the time.
The measure was eventually repealed by the 21st Amendment in 1933.
January 18, 1986
The first Martin Luther King Day was met by opposition in Central Florida and across the nation.
Ku Klux Klan members rallied to protest the holiday named for the slain civil rights leader.
The federal holiday was finally being recognized after President Reagan signed a bill in 1983.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was known for his peaceful efforts towards ending racism and segregation in our country.
He was assassinated in 1968.
January 19, 1977
All across Central Florida people woke up to a white winter, if only for a short time.
Snow flurries filled the sky and collected on the ground.
There was even enough white stuff to build a snowman.
