November 25, 1955

An important civil rights step for African-Americans in Central Florida and across the country.

Segregation of interstate travel was deemed unlawful.

The Interstate Commerce Commission, which regulated national bus and railway travel, ordered the end of separate seating and accommodations on both modes of transportation.

The commission found segregation contrary to the Interstate Commerce Act.

Bus and train companies had to make the transition into desegregation by Jan. 10, 1956.


November 26, 1997

Colonial High School students attempted to fill their entire football field with canned goods, turkeys

and various other pantry items for the needy.

Participants were able to collect enough food to feed more than 300 families.

Students and faculty have made the Thanksgiving food drive an annual event for the school.


November 27, 1946

The identity of State Road 1 was officially changed to State Road A1A.

The original name of the coastal highway caused confusion for drivers since it ran parallel to U.S. Highway 1.

The name change aimed to remedy that situation.

A1A runs along the coast from Jacksonville to Miami.


November 28, 1958

Construction began on a new $30 million highway to run east-west through Orlando.

Interstate 4 met with a great deal of opposition in its planning stages.

Many residents were against the highway going through the heart of the city. They wanted it to have a more westerly route.

But despite complaints, all sections were built as planned and the road was fully open by March 1965.


November 29, 1894

Stetson University in DeLand played its first football game.

The game was an intramural contest on Thanksgiving Day. It was so popular, crowds filled the entire grandstands and beyond.
   
The Stetson football tradition came to an end in the 1950s.

The team’s last game was played against University of Havana in 1956 in Key West.


November 30, 1984

A new Orange County Administration Building was dedicated.

The building sits on the corner of Rosalind Avenue and Church Street in Downtown Orlando.

To this day, the County Commission and chamber members gather there to discuss the future of Orange County.


December 1, 1961

It was groundbreaking day at Central Florida's first exclusive neighborhood: Bay Hill.

Plans showed the West Orange County development including lavish homes and a golf course for residents to enjoy.

Planners promised Bay Hill would be comparable to Palm Springs, Calif. and Boca Raton, Fla.
