Gooding's supermarket

October 28, 1964

Jim Gooding opened his first supermarket on South Orlando Avenue in Maitland.

Eventually, the one store with 30 employees turned into a chain of 13 throughout Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties.

At one point, the Gooding's chain employed more than 1,500 people.

Recently, all but three stores were sold to Winn Dixie.

Passengers flying the friendly skies landed on the east runway of McCoy Air Force Base.

Delta Airlines was the first commercial carrier to use the base. It was part of an agreement between the Air Force and the City of Orlando.

That is because the then Herndon International Airport didn't have long enough runways for bigger planes.

Today, McCoy Air Force Base is better known as the Orlando International Airport.

October 30, 1986

Five celebrity ducks waddled down a red carpet at Orlando International Airport, hopped in a white limousine and sped off to the Peabody Hotel. They were helping carry out a half-century tradition.

It began after a hotel manager began dropping his own ducks into the fountain at the Peabody in Memphis, Tennessee.

Since their arrival at the Orlando Peabody, the ducks have been a main attraction and waddle through the lobby every morning at 11 a.m.

October 31, 1972

Not too many Kissimmee residents were brave enough to go near Shingle Creek Swamp.

That's because of rumors that one of the city commissioners was swallowed up by some mysterious gob of goo, never to be seen or heard from again.

Whether that Halloween tale was fact or fiction, Shingle Creek, one of the most polluted streams in the state, was still a pretty scary place to be.

Today, the creek is surrounded by development along Highway 192. It's not exactly as spooky as it used to be.

November 1, 1992

Glenda Hood was sworn in as mayor of Orlando.

Hood was the first woman to hold the position.

Before becoming mayor, the Orlando native was a successful businesswoman, and served as a city commissioner for 10 years.

She continued to serve the City Beautiful after her term as Mayor, acting as Secretary of State until 2005.

November 2, 1997

A tornado struck New Smyrna Beach shortly before 1 a.m.

It hit four places, damaging or destroying more than 60 buildings and hundreds of homes.

The American Red Cross helped out about 300 families. More than two dozen people were injured, but luckily no one was killed.

November 3, 1920

A number of Ocoee residents die after a racial riot on Election Day. The bodies were spread out near Starke Lake on Silver Star Road.

It began after two African-Americans tried to vote without paying a required poll tax.

A white mob chased them home.

Five men died after gunfire broke out and others were driven out of the neighborhood after the mob torched homes.
