Some of you might have a job title that increases your chance of getting a down payment assistance on a new home.
The City of Orlando is trying to turn certain groups of people into homeowners instead of renters, but as News 13's Allison Walker explains, the offer could also benefit seniors living on a low income.
"It's not like people say it is. It's getting better and better every day," said George Wisenbaker.
Wisenbaker is talking about Orlando's Parramore neighborhood.
Despite the fact that Orlando police say 20 percent of the city's crimes happen in the small neighborhood, Wisenbaker said he is proud to have grown up there, and now he wants his parents to move into a new home there.
"Because they're up in age, and kind of make sure they'll be comfortable while they .. for their last days. Just to make sure everything is right for them," Wisenbaker said.
The home is one that the City of Orlando has reduced in price. It is now listed as $137,000 with up to $20,000 additional down payment assistance.
The City of Orlando claims it can get you a price reduction of about $75,000 on a brand new home. But some of people might also be eligible for a down payment, one that might be bigger than they think.
First-time home buyers could get a down payment of $10,000, $20,000 or $30,000.
The city's target groups are teachers, public safety personnel, people who want to live in Parramore and City of Orlando employees. These people do not have to be first-time home buyers to be eligible.
If you are struggling to live off a low income, the Housing and Community Development officials urges you to contact them about becoming a home owner.
According to Lelia Allen, the Director of Housing and Community Development, low income is a family of four that earns $68,000 a year.
Allen said the city helps about four to five families a month with down payment assistance.
