Social Drinking May Be Good For Some Seniors

More and more seniors are becoming alcoholics, according to the American Council on Alcoholism.

The council estimates that nearly one out of 10 people over age 60 has alcohol-related problems.

But in this Generation to Generation report, News 13's Allison Walker catches up with some senior women who say social drinking is actually good for you.

"I usually don't drink it at home because I'm home alone. But I do enjoy it out with friends with a nice dinner," said Fran Treu, who lives in The Villages.

Treu isn't a heavy drinker. Instead, some would say she's a social drinker.

According to Stanford University health officials, "Social drinking is the consumption of alcohol without reaching the point of being drunk. It is drinking in a safe, legal and responsible manner, allowing you to socialize."

The Stanford health officials added that drinking three or fewer measured alcoholic beverages keeps you within the social drinking range.

So, why do people drink in a social situation?

"It kind of eases you into a meal and it nice before the meal is served," Treu said.

"I think it's just an easier thing to serve with guests for dinner and enjoy a glass maybe after work," said Kay Mosure, who also lives in The Villages.

Stanford give more reasons:

  • Drinking can be relaxing
  • It's a social norm in our culture and is considered acceptable in many situations
  • Drinking can makes people feel more at ease

"A client of mine once said, "Wine makes the man's heart warm, but makes the ladies giggle," said Roxanne Trainer, a consultant with PRP Wine International.

Trainer said she has noticed that wine is a good way to get people out and avoid being alone.

"It's a time when people gather and they have camaraderie and they enjoy one's company," Trainer said.

But health officials warn that a person who is a non-drinker should not start drinking simply to get friends to come over.
There is always a coffee shop.
