COCOA -- Mayors from all of Brevard County's 16 cities got out of their offices and helped deliver hot meals to homebound Meals On Wheels recipients in their cities. It was all part of Mayor for Meals Day.
The goal of the campaign was to increase public awareness of senior nutrition, and get some much needed volunteers.
Meals On Wheels officials said the slumping economy and high gas prices has made it harder to find folks willing to drive to deliver food.
"A program that is desperately needed. We will continue to fund them as long as we have the available funds to provide the services," said Cocoa Mayor Michael Blake.
Meals On Wheels of Brevard County was trying to come up with about $500,000 to fix problems in its kitchen, and replace an aging delivery van.
The program feeds about 2,000 people.
That is why the Brevard County mayors who gave a helping hand are our Central Floridians of the Week.
