MINNEOLA -- Grassy Lake Elementary School raised more than $4,700 in pennies during their "Pasta for Pennies" campaign, a fundraiser benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The school has three students that are in remission, or currently receiving treatments for leukemia, so school families and staff rallied together to support their classmates, and ultimately collected the most pennies in the district.
"The kids got into it," said Kelley Lozicki, a teacher at Grassy Lake, whose son is among the students in remission. "There were many times that I felt like crying, because the kids wanted to give every penny that they had. It was really heartfelt."
Teachers said they expected to get another "Pasta for Pennies" campaign up and running as soon as possible to raise even more cancer awareness.
That is why the students and staff at Grassy Lake Elementary are our Central Floridians of the Week.
