Lisa Bell, Central Floridians of the Week
They are best known for saving lives by cutting through flames, but some Central Florida firefighters are also saving lives by cutting their hair.
Fifteen Orlando firefighters made a bold statement by going bald.
This month they shaved their heads to raise awareness and money for the St. Baldricks Foundation, which specializes in cancer research for children.
"It raises money for children's cancer research. We shave our heads to show solidarity with children going through cancer treatment because they typically lose their hair with chemotherapy, whatever treatment they are going through. We are trying to show them that it is OK to be bald and we support them," said Eric Miller, an Orlando firefighter.
"I think it's funny, and I think it's great for them to do that because it's good for not only me, but for other kids around the world and for in the United States and so I think it's really great that they are doing that tonight. I appreciate it," said Matthew Loy, from Merritt Island, who has leukemia.
This is the third year the firefighters have shaved their heads. During this year's event, they raised about $15,000 for cancer research.
That is why they are our Central Floridians of the Week.
