Nearly 17,000 people are killed each year by drunk drivers and more than 250,000 more are injured, according to the latest National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report.
But just as many people are trying to stop drunk drivers, including a local 14-year-old girl who's work is now being honored by the state, and by News 13 as our Central Floridian of the Week.
Amber Vreeland, 14, is urging her peers to steer away from drinking and driving through her art.
The Lake Weir Middle School student created a winner when she drew a poster urging fellow students to not drink and drive.
The Marion County student was chosen as this year's state-wide middle school poster winner for SADD -- Students Against Destructive Decisions. She also won a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.
This is the second year for SADD's middle school poster contest, and Lake Weir Middle students won both years.
That is why Amber Vreeland is our Central Floridian of the Week.
