Joshua Cope answered the call of duty in Iraq and now he is being honored for his courage and dedication with a brand new home. He and his family are also News 13's Central Floridians of the Week.
This week the 24-year-old U.S. Army sergeant, his wife and his 18-month-old daughter were the guests of honor at a "Welcome to West Orange County reception."
Cope lost both of his legs and suffered serious injuries to his hands when a bomb went off near his Humvee.
The native Floridian also lost three of his comrades in that incident, which happened during his second year of deployment in Iraq.
Cope is still on the long road to recovery, but his life just got a little easier thanks to the West Orange Habitat For Humanity.
The organization selected Cope as the first recipient of their "Home at Last" program, which provides homes for disabled veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars.
Cope and his family will now be living in West Orange County. Officials said this is the least they can do for the men and women who fight for our country.
