A class at Montverde Academy launched a shoes for Christmas drive a few weeks ago, and since then, several other child care organizations have jumped on the bandwagon.
Their goal: to donate hundreds of shoes to local children whose families cannot afford them this holiday season.
The campaign, called "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," was started by a teacher at Montverde Academy in Lake County.
Carmen Synovec teaches Pre-K, and is teaching her students to give back this holiday season.
"Because some people have no shoes," said Maddie Siler, 4, one of Synovec's students.
Like Maddie, students at the school are bringing in as many pairs of shoes as they can.
"We told the children to bring a pair of shoes in their size that they would like to have," Synovec explained.
The shoes have been donated to children throughout the county in foster care, part of adoptive families, or in relative care that may not be able to afford a pair like these.
Kai Eisenhardt, a student, brought in boots for the drive. "They're furry and they're really soft," she said.
When asked how many kids out there do not have shoes, Luke Foley replied "A lot."
Students and staff have collected well over 250 pairs of shoes.
"It's a basic necessity that everyone has to have. We hope it adds one small thing to their Christmas," Synovec said.
It certainly will, and that is why the teacher and students are our Central Floridians of the Week.
