Additional Information

A group of teachers in Central Florida have banded together to help the homeless, but in this case, the homeless are not adults.

November is National Homeless Youth awareness month, and over 4 percent of the students at Lee Middle School in Orlando are homeless.

"Some of them live in shelters, some of them live in hotels, some of them live with other relatives, and some of them move from home to home, just so they have a roof over their head," journalism teacher Doris Keeler explained.

So Keeler, along with several of her colleagues, have begun collecting donations to help those students.

They have received toothbrushes, shampoo, food, clothing, blankets, money and non-perishable items.

"I think they find it kind of hard to believe that someone's reaching out to them in this manner," Keeler said. "It's something that they're not used to, and they're very proud children. They don't want to be identified as homeless. They just want to be normal students, like the rest of them."

Anyone wishing to donate items or money can do so by contacting Lee Middle School.

That is why Doris Keeler and her colleagues are our Central Floridians of the Week.
