Eight orphaned Colombian children will be coming to the Brevard area to participate in our five-week Summer Miracles 2008 Program. Orlando - 14th Annual RotaryFest 2008

RotaryFest 2008 will hit the sidewalks of Lake Eola’s International Land Bridge. The street painting concept originated in Italy, where it is called "I modernari." RotaryFest is a one-day, fun-filled artistic triumph. This year’s event will feature over 80 artists using chalk as a medium for their paintings. Seeing the creation of art with a background of sun, music and entertainment result in a fundraising event to be remembered. The Rotary Club of Orlando is celebrating the 14th anniversary of the event. Since its inception, the proceeds have always been earmarked for Orlando’s children’s charities, raising over $200,000. Beneficiaries include Ivey Lane School, The Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and the Russell Home for Atypical Children. Join us for a proclamation reading honoring the event, and the Rotarians that helped shape the Central Florida region over the last century. Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations and helps to build good will and peace in the world. The Rotary Club of Orlando is Central Florida's oldest and largest club, founded in 1920.

The Miss Florida Latina and Miss Florida Teen Latina pageants are casting/auditioning for contestants. Hopeful contestants must be females ages 14 to 17 for the teen division, and ages 18 to 27 for the Miss division, single, never married, without children, and residents or students of the state of Florida. The Miss Florida Latina and Teen Florida Latina Pageants are preliminaries to the nationally recognized Miss Latina U.S. and Miss Teen U.S. Latina pageants, the most famous and prestigious pageants for Latinas in the U.S. Our Miss and Teen winners go on to represent the state of Florida in the national competitions, where they will have the opportunity of a lifetime and receive national television and media exposure. The winner of Miss Latina U.S. will go on to represent the United States at the International Miss Latin America Pageant, known internationally as Miss America Latina. Orlando - Celebrate the State of Israel's 60th Independence Day

Come celebrate the State of Israel's 60th Independence Day at Lake Eola Park, with food, fun and fireworks. An unprecedented number of organizations have joined together to create an evening of celebration. These organizations consist of local synagogues, the JCC of Greater Orlando, the agencies of the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando, local Jewish organizations, and corporate sponsors. Internationally renowned Israeli theatrical group Re-Vital will be performing "Jerusalem Forever," an electrifying and refreshing play, ideal for all ages. The afternoon starts off with a live DJ playing Israeli music, followed by children's and youth choral performances. Later in the day, we will be having an Israeli drum and band performance, capped off with a free fireworks display, courtesy of Four Seasons Display. We have glatt kosher food available -- falafel, shawarma, kabobs, hamburgers, hot dogs, and desserts. We will also have an array of desserts, cotton candy, popcorn, and Italian ice! Orlando - Women's Only Self Defense Class

Knowledge is power: Be empowered. Be safe. In honor of Mother's Day, Gym Rat Boxing and Fitness will be offering women's-only self defense seminars. This free, half-hour seminar is geared for women ages 15 and older. The importance of physical awareness and awareness of several situations where women need to be cautious will be discussed. The primary intent is to teach avoidance in situations where women typically become vulnerable. The seminar will be taught by Todd Drespling, coach and owner of Gym Rat Boxing and Fitness. Coach Todd has over 25 years of boxing experience, and holds an Amateur World Championship Boxing title. He is a licensed coach and a certified trainer. Also in attendance for some of the seminars will be a guest speaker from the Seminole County Sheriff's department discussing what situations to avoid. Coach Todd will lead the class in a warmup segment, a basic stance, punch and kick segment, and role playing. There will be some light contact. Women should wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes.

Lake Mary - Lake Mary 5/10K Walk

The Mid-Florida Milers Walking Club promotes recreational walking for fun and fitness. They will host a walk in Lake Mary, starting at Liberty Park. The walk is sanctioned by the American Volkssport Association, and is open to the public. Walkers are given a guide with detailed written instructions, and are welcome to walk with a group, a companion, or by themselves. Participants begin walking as soon as they register. After strolling through the park, the walk will continue into the shaded streets of residential Lake Mary. Suitable for wheelchairs and strollers and pets are allowed. The distance is 10 kilometers (6 miles), and a shorter 5 kilometer (3 mile) trail will be available.

Sanford - Pet Adopt-a-Thon and "In Hope" Pet Day

We have gathered together rescue groups around Florida to pull dogs and puppies, cats and kittens from kill shelters. Each animal available for adoption is being given a second chance at life. They are waiting for the miracle of adoption before it is too late. There will also be two rescue horses whose tales will bring a tear to your eye. Come and meet all these beautiful, innocent and loving animals. Bring your family, friends, pets and neighbors. We have vendors from dog trainers, pet groomers, dog clothing, pet photography, artists, kids' face painting, and lots of food and beverage from hot dogs, gyros, ice cream and delicious, hand-baked cookies and cakes. Please open your heart and home to a desperate pet, and if you can't spare the room at your home, at least come and give a lonely pet a hug and a treat! The rescue groups are gratefully accepting donations, either monetary or in the form of pet supplies and pet food.

Winter Springs - Relay for Life of Winter Springs

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer in our community. Your involvement will help the American Cancer Society work toward a mission of eliminating cancer as a major health issue, and strive toward a future where cancer does not take the lives of our friends and family. During the event, teams will gather at the Winter Springs High School track and take turns walking laps. However, Relay is much more than a walk around a track. It's a time to remember those lost to cancer and celebrate those who have survived. Most importantly, Relay gives you the power to fight back in the battle against cancer. Join a team, or start your own team, and help us celebrate, remember and fight back.

Sanford - Seminole County Poll Worker Information Session

Altamonte Springs - South East Coast Regional Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament

The winners from the state tournaments of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida will box to see who advances to the National Tournament held at the Olympic Educational Center in Marquette, Mich., in June. Only the 15 and 16-year-olds advance to the National Tournament.

The popular event features painting, jewelry, ceramics, glass blowing, sculpture, fabric arts and more; free children’s activities, entertainment and a special prize drawing. DeLand - Victoria Park's 5th Annual 5K Road Race

Victoria Park will host its annual 5K Road Race and Fitness Walk through the community. Proceeds will benefit the Kiwanis Club of DeLand, an organization serving children and families of west Volusia County. Awards will be given to top finishers, as well as the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Prizes will also be given to best St. Patrick’s Day costumes.
