Teaching can be an expensive profession.
Many educators say they have come out of pocket each year to provide some necessary material for classroom instruction.
But, as News 13's Tiffany Greene explains, the Orlando community is raising money for school supplies.
There will be plenty of pencils, paper and books on hand at Dommerich Elementary School. Dozens of students who attend the school and their parents headed outdoors to support their teachers at the ninth annual Beach Blanket BBQ.
Through silent auctions and donations, the Parent Teacher Association will use more than $19,000 to provide teachers with the classroom supplies that they're normally not able to afford, and to support the school in other areas.
"This is basically important for the children of our school to have updated technology that sometimes the county is unable to provide immediately. And it's good for the teachers to have some extra spending money to spend on things they see viable in the classroom," said Joellen McLean, chairperson
of the PTA.
