Tiffany Greene, Building Community
Unfortunate situations can sometimes create positive outcomes. News 13's Tiffany Greene talked to an Orlando woman who is hoping to turn her adversity into something good.
Betty Mignott has helped to raise seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren on one income. Last month part of her house caught fire.
"My great-grandbaby went out the door and just that quick I went out the door to get him, the grease was hotter than I thought it was, when I looked up, I saw smoke coming out of the door," Mignott told Greene.
"It ripped through her dining room and through the kitchen and through the den area right here. It looks a mess," said Izona Gordon, Mignott's daughter.
Mignott walked around her house surveying the damage.
"I ended up burning my kitchen and dining room by accident," Mignott said.
Mignott is living with her daughter. At the time of the fire, she did not have homeowner's insurance. Now she's asking the community for help.
"I can't afford the material. I need help with the material and getting everything I need for in here. Right now I just can't do it," Mignott said.
Mignott is receiving help from Kaley Elementary School where her great-grandchildren attend. Staff secured contractors to do the work and the Red Cross is helping to buy $500 worth of materials.
"Once I get the material, I could probably fix it up some by some," Mignott said.
