With the flip of the power switch, a new source of energy is installed at Waterford Elementary School in Orange County.
The school's partnership with Progress Energy's Solar Wise for Schools program makes it one of the first schools to receive solar panels.
Already being green is paying off, as the Clean Air Team breezed through to award the partnership's efforts.
"We were able to support a two [kilowatt] system here at the school, providing solar energy and a curriculum of energy education that will provide energy analysis, energy efficiency and renewable energy education for the students," said Christopher Gillman, with Progress Energy Florida.
Two students used their brain power and turned it into solar power.
"For my science project, I used fruits to figure out what fruits can do energy, and I found out that lemons, apples and oranges produce the most energy," said Kailey Meehan, winner of a science project competition for the school.
Discoveries like that will continue to drive the Solar Wise for Schools programs over the years, helping with research and analysis of how best to produce energy for the future.
