Jessica Fleury has never been able do some of things many may take for granted. She depends on her parents to get her around.
It’s a birth defect that keeps her in a wheelchair and there is no cure, but life for Jessica is about to get a bit easier. She has been chosen to receive a companion - a dog who is trained to do all sorts of things.
"They can call for help. And get things for her. And pull her,” said Jessica’s dad, Stephen Fleury.
He said other methods she's trying isn't doing much good.
"She's used some attachment tools like grabbers and things like that. But they're kind of clumsy and cumbersome,” he said.
Jessica's new buddy is thanks to Wishbone and Wal-Mart. They've teamed up to raise money for "Give Kids the World" - a non-profit organization in Kissimmee that provides kids will chronic illnesses free weeklong vacations to Orlando's theme parks, and holds monthly events for local kids like Jessica.
Vendors, associates, everyone involved in raising money for Give Kids The World are being treated to a couple rounds of golf. It's through their efforts that Jessica gets to enjoy her gift for the rest of her life, a gift that costs $10,000.
She’ll get to choose the dog she wants and they'll go through a training program together. Her family won't have to pay for veterinarian visits – ever.
"It was just a great feeling,” Jessica said.
"Give Kids the World is getting more than $1 million dollars thanks to this year's fundraiser. Coming up Wednesday, News 13 will show you how that money will make the Kissimmee facility bigger and more fun for kids who deserve a bit of fantasy.
