ORLANDO -- Time is running out for first-time homebuyers to cash in on an $8,000 tax credit.
But local Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas wants to extend the Nov. 30 deadline.
She toured the new Avalon Park home of an engaged couple Monday morning.
They started house hunting in the spring.
They say they wouldn't be homeowners if it wasn't for the credit.
"This is a house for kids, and right near the schools and it's big enough to start a family so it worked out in our favor," said Laura Sezbeau, first-time homeowner.
In a bill Kosmas is co-sponsoring, the congresswoman and former realtor says people trying to buy now can't meet the deadline because too many people are selling with negative equity, and it's tough to track down banks for approval.
"The state of Florida where there are the employment problems and also foreclosure, this allows us to absorb some of that inventory so it can begin to get back on it's robust course that has been such a good part of Florida for so many years," Kosmas said.
One million people have purchased homes under the program so far this year including 49,000 Floridians.
