ORLANDO -- If you used a credit card in Florida in 2008, your personal information could have been at risk after a massive data breach.
The Orlando Sentinel Friday reported Heartland Payment Systems, a credit card processor with clients in Florida, experienced the breach in more than 100 million credit and debit card transactions last year.
The company did not say exactly how many records were compromised.
The breach was discovered after Visa and MasterCard noticed suspicious activity with transactions in the Heartland system.
Heartland Payment Systems processes cards for about 250,000 businesses nationwide, including restaurants, hotels and motels.
What Should You Do Next?
In a press release linked on the company's Web site, Heartland Payment Systems advised cardholders to examine their monthly statements closely, and report any suspicious activity to their card issuers.
Cardholders are not responsible for unauthorized, fraudulent charges made by third parties.
The company said it is posting information about the breach online at 2008breach.com.
