If you had to take shelter during a storm, would you know where the safest room in your home is?
As News 13 looked on, Maria Ybrudy from the American Red Cross helped homeowner Annette find the safest place in her home.
Ybrudy and Annette checked the dining room and kitchen off their list because there were too many windows in each room.
One bathroom was too small to fit Annette and her family.
Annette and Ybrudy finally settled on the guest room. It only had one window, there was plenty of space and it had easy access to a bathroom.
However, the room is missing a land line telephone, which Annette promised to get installed.
“We had a lot of options,” Ybrudy said. “We had a lot of rooms to look at, but when it came down to it on what you must have in a shelter or in place room, it really limited our options. We needed a land line. We needed enough space for everybody and the pets and their disaster supplies and we need little or no window space.”
When choosing a safe room, make sure it is a room with limited window space, that it gives you access to a bathroom and that it gives you space for emergency supplies.
During hurricane season, News 13's team of meteorologists will have tropical updates at 21 minutes and 51 minutes past every hour.
